Dr Matthew J. Walton on the misunderstanding of Myanmar’s ‘Buddhist Nationalists’

Matthew Walton has written an article for the Asia Times (9 June) entitled ‘Misunderstanding Myanmar’s Ma Ba Tha’, about how media both within and outside of Myanmar have a tendency to misinterpret the true nature of the Buddhist Ma Ba Tha group and its underlying popularity as a defender of the faith.

Matthew writes, “Simply put, a large proportion of Buddhists in Myanmar continue to be genuinely worried about the fate of their religion. This anxiety has been problematically and inaccurately directed towards Islam and Muslims, often through misinformation.”
