Dr Marwa Daoudy comments on the protests in Egypt for BBC2s Newsnight

Date

Dr Marwa Daoudy took part in a discussion for BBC2s Newsnight (9 February) on the political crisis in Egypt, including an analysis of the role of the Muslim Brotherhood, and appeared again on the same programme (17 February), commenting on how events in Egypt are now affecting the wider Middle East.

Analogies were made in the first programme between the situation in Egypt and that of the Iranian Revolution, particularly in relation to the role and impact of the Muslim Brotherhood as compared with Ayatollah Khomeini and his supporters. Marwa suggested that these comparisons are not relevant in this case.

On the morning of 11 February, Marwa was also interviewed by BBC World News, BBC National News and the BBC Breakfast Show in relation to the events in Egypt.

In Marwas second appearance on Newsnight the discussion focussed on the protests in Bahrain: whether it is likely that the domino effect of protests in Egypt and Tunisia will effect stability in the wider region and how western powers should respond. The full programme can be seen here.
