Dr Markus Kornprobst Awarded B A Conference Grant

Dr Markus Kornprobst has been awarded a British Academy Conference Grant for his conference Arguing Global Governance: Lifeworlds, Power, Reasoning, Persuasion, and Change`.

The main objectives of Dr Kornprobst`s conference ‘Arguing Global Governance: Lifeworlds, Power, Reasoning, Persuasion, and Change` are the following:

  • Provide a high-quality forum of inter-disciplinary inquiry among European, Middle Eastern, and North American scholars on the role of argumentation in international politics as well as highlight different approaches to the study of argumentation in world politics.
  • Identify the main challenges for global governance as well as the potential of research on argumentation to make sense of these challenges and reflect about ways to address them.
  • Inquire in more detail into the argumentative processes that shape reasoning, make an argument persuasive, and translate into international outcomes, such as crisis management, cooperation and the development of institutions.
  • Elaborate on the linkages and feedback mechanisms of these processes.
  • Elaborate on the role of argumentation in structuring lifeworlds, relations of power, legitimacy and change.
  • Finalize preparations for the publication of an edited book based on the papers presented at the conference with a leading university press.

The conference will take place on 21 and 22 June 2008.

Dr Markus Kornprobst is RJ Vincent Post-doctoral Fellow at the Department of Politics and International Relations, and Lecturer at Magdalen College.
