Dr Harry Verhoeven discusses politics and religion in Sudan

Date

In an interview with Radio France International (19 November), Harry Verhoeven discussed the recent meeting of Al-Harakat Al-Islamiyya, an Islamist movement, in Khartoum, Sudan.

Describing the conference as the most important political meeting in Sudan in the last 10 or 15 years, Harry noted that the Islamist reformist movement in Sudan believes the government has failed to learn any lessons from the secession of South Sudan, and is pushing the government of President Omar al-Bashir for more wide-ranging political and economic reforms.

Harry Verhoeven is the Convenor of the Oxford University China-Africa Network (OUCAN) and is currently undertaking postdoctoral research at the DPIR, after having completed his doctorate at the Department earlier this year.
