Dr Gwendolyn Sasse awarded a John Fell Fund grant

Date

Gwendolyn Sasse has been awarded a grant from the John Fell OUP Research Fund Small Awards Scheme for the project Engaging with the Homeland: A Survey of Ukrainian Migrants.

In her project abstract, Gwendolyn says, This project will focus on the analysis of this large-scale survey of migrant voters (about 2,500 responses) and aims to combine a better understanding of the sociological profile of the Ukrainian migrants with an analysis of their patterns of interaction with Ukraine (e.g. accessing information about politics, discussing current affairs with families, friends and colleagues at home and abroad, voting, economic remittances, plans for the future etc.), their perceptions of Ukrainian politics from afar as well as their interest in and engagement with local or national politics in their countries of residence. Thus, the originality of this project lies in its focus on the political dimensions of an ongoing migration process characterised by an unprecedented degree of flexibility, responsiveness to conditions at home and abroad, frequent and diverse contacts with Ukraine underpinned by short distances, cheap travel options, extensive networks at home and abroad, and a multitude of cheap and instant means of communication.

The project will run from October 2010 - September 2011.
