Dr Eric Morier-Genoud Awarded B A Conference Grant

Date
Dr Eric Morier-Genoud has been awarded a British Academy Conference Grant for his OReNGA workshop, ‘The Politics of Nations and Nationalism in Lusophone Africa`.
Following recent trends in nationalism studies, this workshop will try to reconstruct, complexify and renew the history and content of nationalism in Lusophone Africa. First, it will attempt to renew our understanding of African nationalism by looking at marginal and even failed organizations or movements (e.g. UNITA, MANC, etc.). Secondly, it will adopt a new angle of analysis (discourse analysis, the study of gender or culture) to renew our understanding on the subject. And, finally, the workshop will analyse the politics of Lusophone nations and nationalism today - how is the nation conceived, nationalism used, etc.

The workshop will gather younger and established scholars from Africa, Europe, the USA. They will present, discuss and eventually publish innovative papers which will hopefully set a new agenda on the topics of the decade to come.

The workshop will take place on 6 and 7 December 2007.

Dr Eric Morier-Genoud is Thomas L. Hodgkin Research Fellow, Oxford Research Network on Government in Africa, St Cross College
