Doron Shultziner publishes Struggling for Recognition: The Psychological Impetus for Democratic Progress

Date

Doron Shultziner, a DPIR D.Phil alumnus, has published a book arguing that the drive for personal recognition is a prime motivation behind the pursuit of democracy.

Dorons book, which is based on research he completed for his D.Phil thesis, examines the role human psychology plays in political processes. Introducing an oft-neglected causal force in the study of democratic transitions, the book argues the pursuit of recognition becomes the impetus for action and is used to overcome fear as well as rational costs and benefits calculations involved in collective action.

The book was published by Continuum (hardcover 2010; paperback 2012), and is available for purchase from Amazon here.
