Dapo Akande appears on Newsnight panel discussing the lawfulness of arming Syrian rebels

Date

Dapo Akande appeared on BBC2's 'Newsnight' (9 July) as part of a panel to discuss the ethics and the law concerning international intervention in the current civil unrest in Syria.

When asked directly whether it would be legal for a country like Britain to arm the rebels in Syria, Dapo replied that it would not, as under international law (as laid down by the United Nations charter) "it would be no different to going into Syria with our own troops".

Dapo Akande is University Lecturer in Public International Law, Yamani Fellow at St. Peter's College and Co-Director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC).
