Chris Mahony on warlord Chales Taylors ICC conviction

Date

Chris Mahony published a comment piece on the Atlantic (30 April, 2012) on the conviction for war crimes of former Liberian president Charles Taylor by the International Criminal Court.

Chris argues that the war crimes conviction does not advance the universal cause of justice. He says The truth is that Taylor is an aberration, the exception that proves the rule of a nascent international justice system that is developing in such a way as to reflect global power, not the ideals of global justice.

Chris analyzes the institutional reasons for the failure by tracing the ways in which Ugandan President Museveni and Rwandan President Kagame have been able to avoid indictions by the ICC. He concludes that international justice was just one of the tools that the U.S. used to force Taylor out of office. That might have been a good thing in ousting Taylor, but its not exactly justice or rule of law at its purest.
