Annette Idler named Vice Chancellor’s Early Career Innovator

Congratulations to Annette Idler who is the winner of the Early Career Innovator category in the Vice-Chancellor Innovation Awards for her work on rethinking conflict to build peace. She was also Highly Commended in the Inspiring Leadership category.

The Vice-Chancellor Innovation Awards celebrate research-led innovation that is having societal or economic impact. Winners and Highly Commended entries were selected by the Vice-Chancellor’s Innovation Awards panel chaired by Professor Chas Bountra, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Innovation, and comprising academics from each of the four Divisions and Professional Services staff who support impact and innovation across the collegiate University.

Dr Annette Idler has been recognised for her work leading an interdisciplinary 18-people-team, bringing together ethnographic fieldwork with quantitative analysis, complexity science, visualization techniques, visual arts, and historical tracing to provide evidence-based guidance on the directions and pace of change in conflict.

Her "out-of-the-box" collaborative approach has enabled the development of the Changing Character of Conflict Tool, interactive online visualizations, data analysis software, podcasts, UN training curriculum modules and civil society Best Practices guidelines.

As a result of her work UN practitioners now account for the dynamic and cross-border character of conflict in their analysis and Colombian stakeholders from power centres and marginalized communities narrowed the gap between their respective understandings of security needs.
