Shashank Joshi is Defence Editor at The Economist, where he covers a wide range of security and defence issues. His most recent briefings have focused on the evolving nature of modern warfare and defence technology, as well as Russia’s war of attrition in Ukraine.

Before joining the Economist, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, where he now serves on the Advisory Board, and a Research Associate at Oxford University’s Changing Character of War Programme. He has also previously given lectures at the UK Defence Academy and Atomic Weapons Establishment, provided evidence to the House of Commons’ foreign affairs and defence select committees, and published books on Iran’s nuclear programme and India’s armed forces. He holds a BA from Cambridge, MA from Harvard, where he was a Kennedy Scholar. He has also graduated from the Columbia-Cornell Summer Workshop on the Analysis of Military Operations and Strategy. At The Economist, his most recent briefings have focused on the evolving nature of modern warfare and defence technology, as well as Russia’s war in Ukraine.
